Chinnaswamy, powerplay, ball four of the second over. Bengaluru have just slapped two fours in a row and the "6 over runs" line on your screen jumps from No 55 / Yes 56 to No 58 / Yes 59 while you're still reaching for your chai. Your friend says "take Yes, this ground is tiny". Before you do anything, you'd better know what you're actually buying.
Fancy, or session, betting is the most Indian bit of the betting exchange. It's also the bit most people learn the hard way. This post explains how the lines work, how the rates pay, why payouts are fixed no matter how far the runs land from the line, and what to check before placing one on DIAMONDEXCH999.
What is a fancy or session bet in cricket?
A session bet is a bet on a number. Not who wins, just a count. How many runs after 6 overs. How many runs a batter makes. How many runs by the fall of the next wicket. On DIAMONDEXCH999 these sit under the Normal tab, and you'll hear people call them fancy, session or Normal markets interchangeably.
Each market shows two sides:
- No, on the lower number. You win if the final count is that number or less.
- Yes, on the higher number. You win if the final count is that number or more.
So with "6 over runs: No 58 / Yes 59", No 58 wins on 58 or fewer. Yes 59 wins on 59 or more. There's no gap and no draw. One side wins every time.
How do fancy rates and payouts work?
Rate 100 means even money
Under each number you'll see a rate, usually 100. The rate is what you win per ₹100 staked. At 100, a ₹400 bet wins ₹400. Simple.
When the rate isn't 100
Sometimes the line is shown at a different rate, say Yes 59 at 90. That pays ₹90 for every ₹100, so a ₹400 stake wins 400 × 90 ÷ 100 = ₹360. The rate is the market's way of tilting the price without moving the number. Always read the rate, not just the line, because two bets on the same number can pay quite differently.
The payout is fixed
This is the part that catches people. Your win or loss doesn't grow with how far the runs land from the line. If you back Yes 59 for ₹400 at 100 and Bengaluru end the powerplay on 74, you win ₹400. If they end on 59, you still win ₹400. If they end on 58, you lose ₹400, the same as if they'd finished on 31.
| Runs after 6 overs | ₹400 on Yes 59 at 100 | ₹400 on No 58 at 100 |
|---|---|---|
| 41 | Lose ₹400 | Win ₹400 |
| 58 | Lose ₹400 | Win ₹400 |
| 59 | Win ₹400 | Lose ₹400 |
| 74 | Win ₹400 | Lose ₹400 |
Notice the 58 and 59 rows. One run is the whole difference. Fancy markets are decided on the edges far more often than you'd think, so don't treat a line as "safe" just because it looks low.
Why do session lines move every ball?
The line is a live estimate of where the count will finish. Every delivery changes that estimate. A boundary pushes it up. A dot ball or a wicket pulls it down. That's why our Chinnaswamy line went from 55/56 to 58/59 in two balls.
You'll also notice the market goes suspended for a moment as the bowler runs in, and for longer around wickets, reviews and injuries. That's normal on DIAMONDEXCH999, as on any exchange. Bets can't be placed while the outcome of the next ball is about to be known. When the market reopens, the number has usually shifted.
A full worked example from the powerplay
Back to Bengaluru. After 1.4 overs they're 18/0 and the line reads No 58 / Yes 59 at 100 each. You reckon the short boundaries and a weak fifth bowler make 59 likely, so you put ₹500 on Yes.
To hit 59, they need 41 more from 26 balls. That's a touch over 9 an over. Possible, not certain. Over the next few overs, a wicket falls at 2.3 and the line drops to No 52 / Yes 53. You can't cancel your bet, but you can add a No position if you want to protect yourself. Say you put ₹500 on No 52. Now:
- Score finishes 52 or under: Yes loses ₹500, No wins ₹500. Net zero.
- Score finishes 53 to 58: both bets lose. Net −₹1,000.
- Score finishes 59 or more: Yes wins ₹500, No loses ₹500. Net zero.
See that middle band? That's the risk of trying to hedge a session bet after the line has moved against you. Sometimes it's worth it. Often it just doubles the pain. Know which band you're exposed to before you add a second bet.
Before you place a session bet, check these
- Which market is it exactly? "6 over runs" and "6 over runs, team name" can be different games entirely.
- Are you on Yes or No, and is the rate 100 or something else? The DIAMONDEXCH999 bet slip shows both.
- What does the scorecard say about the run rate needed to reach the line?
- Who's batting, who's bowling next, and how many balls are left in the session?
- Is this a stake you'd be fine losing by a single run?
Reading the card quickly helps a lot, and our guide to reading a cricket scorecard covers that in detail. For how session markets sit next to Match Odds and Bookmaker on DIAMONDEXCH999, see Match Odds vs Bookmaker vs Normal.
Quick recap
- No wins on the lower number or less; Yes wins on the higher number or more.
- The rate is what you win per ₹100 staked; 100 means even money.
- Payout is fixed. Missing the line by one run costs the same as missing by twenty.
- Lines move every ball and suspend around deliveries and wickets.
Frequently asked questions
What does Yes and No mean in a session bet?
Yes means you think the final count will reach the higher number shown or go past it. No means you think it will stay at the lower number or below. With a line of No 58 and Yes 59, a final score of 58 pays the No side and a final score of 59 pays the Yes side. One of them always wins.
Do I win more if the runs go way past the line?
No. Fancy markets pay a fixed amount set by the rate when you placed the bet. ₹400 on Yes at 100 wins ₹400 whether the score beats the line by one run or by thirty. The flip side is that losing by one run costs you the full stake too, so the edges matter a lot more than people expect.
Why can't I place a session bet sometimes?
The market is suspended. That happens briefly as each ball is bowled, and for longer around wickets, reviews, injuries or rain. It stops anyone betting on an outcome that's about to be known. Wait a few seconds and it reopens on DIAMONDEXCH999, usually with a new number reflecting what just happened on the field.
Where to practise reading the lines
Next match, don't bet the first session at all. Just watch how the line moves with each ball on the DIAMONDEXCH999 live score page and note where it finishes compared to the opening number. Do that for a few games and you'll get a feel for it that no blog can give you. When you're ready to set a budget for session betting, our guide to responsible gaming and limits shows how to keep it under control.
