Remember your mate's bachelor trip to Goa? Someone ended up on a casino boat, put a chip on 23 because it was his birthday, and then spent ten minutes trying to work out why the dealer slid back thirty-five chips plus the original one. Nobody at that table could explain the payouts, but everyone had an opinion about "lucky numbers".

Roulette is one of the simplest casino games to learn and one of the easiest to misunderstand. This post explains the rules, every common bet, what each pays and how often it actually lands, so that when you sit down at a table on DIAMONDEXCH999 you know exactly what you're buying with each chip. Quick note first: casino play is for adults 18 and over, and only where it's legal for you.

How roulette works: the wheel and the table

The version you'll find on DIAMONDEXCH999 is European roulette. The wheel has 37 pockets: numbers 1 to 36, alternating red and black, plus a single green 0. The dealer spins the wheel one way and the ball the other. Wherever the ball settles is the winning number.

The table layout is just a map of those 37 numbers, arranged in three columns of twelve, with the 0 at the top. Around the edges are the boxes for bigger groups: red, black, odd, even, low, high, dozens and columns. Your chip's position decides what you're betting on.

On every DIAMONDEXCH999 roulette table, the minimum chip is 25. That's handy, because it lets you try different bet types without throwing big amounts around.

Roulette bets and payouts

Inside bets

Inside bets go on the numbers themselves. Fewer numbers, bigger payouts, rarer wins.

  • Straight up: one number. Pays 35:1.
  • Split: two neighbouring numbers. Pays 17:1.
  • Street: a row of three. Pays 11:1.
  • Corner: four numbers meeting at a corner. Pays 8:1.
  • Six line: two rows, six numbers. Pays 5:1.

Outside bets

Outside bets cover big groups. More numbers, smaller payouts, more frequent wins. Dozens (1 to 12, 13 to 24, 25 to 36) and columns each pay 2:1. Red, black, odd, even, low (1 to 18) and high (19 to 36) each pay 1:1. The green 0 belongs to none of them, which is the whole point.

What are the real odds in roulette?

Payouts tell you what you get. Odds tell you how often you'll get it. Here's both together for European roulette:

BetNumbers coveredPaysChance per spin
Straight up135:11 in 37 (about 2.7%)
Split217:12 in 37 (about 5.4%)
Street311:13 in 37 (about 8.1%)
Corner48:14 in 37 (about 10.8%)
Six line65:16 in 37 (about 16.2%)
Dozen or column122:112 in 37 (about 32.4%)
Even-money bets (red, black, odd, even, 1 to 18, 19 to 36)181:118 in 37 (about 48.6%)

Notice red is under 50%. That missing slice is the green 0.

The house edge, worked out in rupees

Here's where it all comes together. Say you put ₹100 straight up on 17. If it lands, you win ₹3,500 and keep your ₹100. Now imagine 37 spins where every number comes up exactly once (real life is messier, but this shows the maths). You've staked 37 × ₹100 = ₹3,700. You win once, getting back ₹3,600 (₹3,500 plus your stake). You're down ₹100 on ₹3,700 staked. That's 2.70%.

Run the same sum on red with ₹100 a spin. Over those same 37 spins, the 18 reds each return ₹200 (your ₹100 plus ₹100 winnings), so you get ₹3,600 back on ₹3,700 staked. Same ₹100 short. Every standard bet on a single-zero wheel carries the same 2.70% edge.

For comparison, American roulette adds a 00 pocket, making 38 pockets with the same payouts. That pushes the house edge to 5.26%, nearly double. One more reason the single-zero version is the friendlier table.

Watch out: Doubling systems like "double after every loss on red" don't beat the edge. They just swap lots of small wins for the occasional large loss, and a run of eight or nine blacks happens far more often than people expect. No betting pattern changes the 2.70%.

Does any number come up more often?

No. Each spin is independent. The wheel has no memory of the last spin, or the last fifty. If 17 has just landed three times, it's still 1 in 37 on the next one. Hot and cold number displays, like the ones on the VIP and Beach tables at DIAMONDEXCH999, are fun to look at, but they describe the past, not the future.

Before you place a chip, check these

  1. Confirm it's a single-zero table (it is on DIAMONDEXCH999).
  2. Know what your bet pays and how often it hits, using the table above.
  3. Decide your session budget before the first spin, not after the fifth.
  4. Stick to stakes that would still feel fine after a run of losses.

Our guide to bankroll management shows how to size stakes, and our post on responsible gaming and limits covers limits you can set before you play.

Quick recap

  • European roulette has 37 pockets, 0 to 36, and a 2.70% house edge.
  • Straight up pays 35:1 but hits only 1 in 37 spins on average.
  • Red or black pays 1:1 and hits about 48.6% of the time, thanks to the 0.
  • No system or pattern beats the edge; past spins don't predict the next one.

Frequently asked questions

What does 35:1 mean in roulette?

It means you win 35 times your stake and keep the original chip. So a ₹25 chip straight up on a number that lands pays ₹875 in winnings, and you get your ₹25 back, making ₹900 in total on the table. The same logic applies to every payout: 17:1, 11:1 and so on are winnings on top of your stake.

What happens to my red or black bet if 0 comes up?

It loses. The 0 is green and isn't odd, even, low or high either, so all the even-money outside bets lose when it lands. That single green pocket is exactly where the house edge comes from. Only bets that specifically include the 0, such as a straight up on 0, win on that spin.

What's the minimum bet on DIAMONDEXCH999 roulette?

Every roulette table on DIAMONDEXCH999 has a minimum chip of 25. That keeps it easy to try a few different bet types and learn the layout without big stakes. Remember that roulette is for adults 18 and over, only where it's legal for you, and it works best when you treat it as paid entertainment.

Ready to try a table?

Start small: a few 25 chips on outside bets while you get used to the layout and the payouts. Once that's comfortable, have a look at our walkthrough of VIP and Beach roulette, where you can lay numbers as well as back them.
